Embodiment Construction

[0031] A network topology is shown in Fig. 1, which will serve as an example in the following description of the invention. The network topology includes a number of network nodes, labeled A to L. These network nodes are actually connected to each other by some transmission lines (for example, optical fiber, coaxial cable or microwave link). For simplicity, in this example it is assumed that all transmission lines in the network have the same total transmission capacity. It is also assumed that each link is bidirectional. As shown in Figure 1, the example network topology includes the following physical links: A-B, A-C, B-D, C-D, C-E, D-E, E-F, E-G, E-J, F-I, F-H, F-K, G-H, G-I, G-K, G-L, H-J , I-K, K-L, L-J. The type of failure considered below is the severing of a link between two network nodes.

[0032] As mentioned earlier, Figure 2 illustrates the recovery principle. Data is sent from the source S1 to the sink S2 through the first path P1. The first path P1 is a ser...

Abstract

In order to restore a network after a failure, it is important to have sufficient spare capacity available. To ensure restorability, a Hamiltonian mesh, being a closed sequence of links traversing each network node exactly once, is determined and half of its capacity is reserved for restoration purpose. In the case of a line failure of a link other than the links of the Hamiltonian mesh, affected traffic is split in two portions and rerouted over the two directions of the Hamiltonian mesh. In the case the network has no Hamiltonian mesh, a mesh coverage is determined and sufficient spare capacity reserved for restoration purpose.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the field of telecommunication, in particular to a method for restoring a mesh transmission network when a line failure occurs. The invention also relates to a method for determining the minimum restoration capacity in the mesh transmission network, and corresponding network planning tools and network management equipment. Furthermore, the present invention also relates to a network unit for a mesh transmission network. Background technique [0002] A very fundamental aspect of a telecommunication network is its availability and reliability. Therefore, the operation of such a network requires some mechanism to quickly troubleshoot problems. In a local area network (LAN), such as in a building or on a campus, it may be sufficient to have technicians and a spare stock of equipment because repairs or replacements can be done quickly near the entire facility. [0003] However, in transport networks such as Metropolitan Area Netw...
