In the described example implementation, electronic program guide data is broadcast to client devices implemented, for example, as digital video recorders (DVRs). A user may schedule a client device to record a particular television program that is scheduled for broadcast according to the schedule. When the television program is broadcast, the client device records the program so that the user can watch the program at a later time.

Abstract

Techniques for targeted advertising to consumers of on-demand media content are described. When a television viewer elects to record a broadcast program, advertisements associated with the program are downloaded from the server. The advertisement is presented in conjunction with the recorded program when the user elects to watch the recorded program.

(1) Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to targeted advertising, and more particularly to targeted advertising in conjunction with on-demand media content. (2) Background technology [0002] Advances in technology have made available to consumers digital video recorders (DVRs), which allow television viewers to digitally record broadcast television programs that are then stored on a hard drive. Considered from the cable company's perspective, the obvious downside of DVRs is that they allow viewers to skip commercials, a significant source of revenue for cable companies. Advertisers are less willing to pay for ad outlets when they know that TV viewers can easily skip the ads by using a DVR to record and then avoid watching them later when viewing a particular program.
