[0029]In general, the present invention provides a method of detecting bad RF conditions and entering different sleep mode levels or stages according to the RF conditions to conserve battery power. Mobile device battery life can be conserved when the mobile device detects adverse RF conditions and enters a deep sleep mode of operation. In the deep-sleep mode of operation, the mobile device samples the RF status periodically, and gradually increases the time period between samples when the RF status does not improve. Since mobility can change the RF state of a wireless device even in good RF coverage areas, a mobile device operating in deep sleep mode can detect this mobility and thereby increase the likelihood of entering an idle state, or alternatively , to increase the possibility of entering a longer battery saver mode.
