Embodiment Construction

[0036] Figure 1c An optical transmitter is shown, comprising a laser source 1 followed by a first Mach-Zehnder modulator 2 and a second Mach-Zehnder modulator 3 . The laser source 1 generates a continuous wave optical signal, in the first Mach-Zehnder modulator 2 with a bit rate B=40Gbit / s (not including FEC) corresponding to the bit rate of the subsequent transmission line (not shown) A zero (NRZ) bit electrical signal modulates the intensity of the continuous wave optical signal. The output signal of the first modulator 2 is Figure 2a NRZ optical signal shown in . The NRZ optical signal is used as input to the second dual-way Mach-Zehnder modulator 3 . The second modulator 3 modulates the phase of the NRZ optical signal by performing an alternate π phase shift on the NRZ optical signal every two consecutive bits. Perform ±π phase hopping between successive bit pairs so that successive bit pairs exhibit an alternating sequence of phases: 0, π, 0, π, etc. The phase shift...

Abstract

A method for modulating an optical signal includes the following steps: modulating the intensity of the optical signal with a nonreturn-to-zero bit signal, and modulating the phase of the optical signal with a periodic phase-shift signal creating an alternating À-phase shift every second, third or more consecutive bit. An optical transmitter for performing the above method comprises a first modulator (2) modulating the intensity of the optical signal with a nonreturn-to-zero bit signal, and a second modulator (3) modulating the phase of the optical signal with a periodic phase-shift signal creating an alternating À-phase shift every second, third or more consecutive bit.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] The present invention is based on European priority application EP 05290227.7, the content of which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The invention relates to a method for modulating an optical signal and an optical transmitter for performing such a method. Background technique [0004] Several methods for modulating optical transmission signals are known in the prior art. One of the best-known methods is the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation technique shown in Figure 2. In the NRZ method, each logic bit (logic "1" pulse) is sent with a pulse width equal to the full bit period T = 1 / B, where B is the bit rate (in bits / s) of these pulses to be sent . [0005] Figure 2a A graph showing the intensity (solid line) and phase (dashed line) of a typical NRZ modulated optical signal of a bit signal of 16 consecutive bits with three pairs of consecutive "1" bit pulses. The optical signal inten...
