Problems solved by technology

When assembling such nozzles, it is difficult to confirm that the desired cap or top shield interference is achieved
Also, the process of pre-twisting the nozzle vanes during assembly causes the vanes to deviate from the "design" vane shape
This potentially reduces the efficiency of the airfoil

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Referring first to FIG. 1 , a conventional steam turbine reaction nozzle 10 includes airfoils 12 and an integral radially inner top shroud or cover 14 . The radially outer end of the nozzle is formed with a base 16 having a dovetail configuration. In particular, the base or dovetail 16 is provided with a pair of flanges 18 and 20 projecting in axially upstream and downstream directions, defining a recess 22 therebetween. Note that the nozzle housing or carrier (not shown) is provided with a generally correspondingly shaped dovetail slot which allows the nozzle 10 to be individually loaded into the carrier or housing at conventionally notched cutouts. Thus, each nozzle can fit into the dovetail slot in the carrier until the entire row of nozzles is assembled. Note also that the dovetail configuration can be reversed so that the dovetail groove part is formed in the nozzle and the dovetail hook part is formed on the carrier or housing.

Abstract

A method of manufacturing reaction nozzles for a turbine comprising (a) providing a piece of flat plate stock (38) of predetermined size and thickness; and (b) machining the piece of flat plate stockto form a unitary, arcuate reaction nozzle segment (24) including at least two adjacent nozzle airfoils (26).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of producing steam turbine components, and in particular dovetailed reaction nozzle sections. Background technique [0002] Currently, stationary reaction nozzle stages located between rotating turbine stages (or wheels) consist of individual nozzles that are individually inserted into dovetail slots in the stationary nozzle carrier or in the turbine housing . The nozzle is formed with an integral dovetail at its radially outer end and an integral top shroud at its radially inner end. These nozzles are designed to maintain top shroud contact throughout operation by incorporating a suitable cover or top shroud that interferes with the pre-twisted cold fins. When assembling such nozzles, it is difficult to ascertain whether the desired cap or top shroud interference is achieved. Additionally, the process of pre-twisting the nozzle vanes during assembly causes the vanes to deviate from the "design" vane shape. ...
