[0022] As described above, there is a need for improved presence tracking of nodes in a logical network, particularly in connection with a low data rate or baud rate, less than ideal physical network underlying the logical network, wherein low data rates, and transient presence hamper presence tracking. A naive approach would be to frequently refresh the presence of all nodes at the same rate; however, practically speaking, the assertion criteria for different kinds of nodes on the logical network should be flexible. The invention thus provides a simple, yet robust, optimization of “keep alives” in connection with such a low bandwidth, less than ideal physical network that enables dynamic tuning of logical network(s) according to messaging conditions, and rates of nodes coming and going in the network.
