Embodiments of the present invention attempt to obtain information related to a congestive condition and / or to diagnose a congestive condition of a patient from the information by monitoring the patient's response to a recumbent position of the patient's body. For patients suffering from congestion, respiratory distress will likely occur at some point after the patient's body achieves a recumbent state. The respiratory distress may be measured by comparison of respiratory patterns detected during the recumbent state and during a non-recumbent state. Alternatively, the respiratory distress may be detected by measuring the amount of time the patient remains recumbent and by presuming the patient is experiencing respiratory distress if the amount of time is shorter than a predetermined threshold related to a congestive condition.
