[0014]The present invention improves upon the problems with the prior art by providing a more effective online auction system provided over a communications network such as the Internet. The present invention allows for the full fair market value of items to be realized in an online auction scenario by allowing for a secondary purchase process to occur. By allowing losing bidders to purchase the auctioned item at the price they are willing to pay, the market is allowed to bear the full market value of the auctioned item. This reduces or eliminates the case where an auctioned item does not realize its full price because the auction ended too early or all bidders were not around at the time of completion of the auction.
