Embodiment Construction

[0045] The following is only by way of example and with reference to figure 1 A specific embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail.

[0046] Four ink cartridges 10 are shown, which can contain cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks. In operation, these cartridges may contain different amounts of ink 11, and when printing, the system operates in a first state in which a three-way valve 20 communicates the cartridge with an air inlet 24 through a filter 21 and a pump 25, which A pump is used to pressurize the air (if possible, the air inlet 24 could also be connected to the pressurized air line, thus eliminating the need for the pump 25). The cartridge is thereby pressurized with clean air to a pressure (typically) several hundred millibars above atmospheric pressure. The actual installation of this system would have a second control to control the pump so that it only turns on when needed, and a plenum to provide a buffer against the pressurized air.

Abstract

In an inkjet device for containing, degassing and supplying ink, gas is supplied to a container for the ink so that the gas bubbles through the ink in the container. A controller controls a gas supplying means to operate in at least two modes including a degassing mode in which the pressure in the container is at a degassing pressure and the gas supplying means is controlled to supply the gas at a pressure above the degassing pressure to bubble through the ink, and an ink supplying mode in which the container is at an ink delivery pressure. In preferred examples, the ink container is arranged for supplying ink to a printhead; using the degassing arrangement, the formation of bubbles in the ink at the printhead can be reduced.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the degassing of liquids, especially for use in inkjet systems. Background technique [0002] It is well known that gases dissolved in ink can cause serious problems in inkjet systems. In many inkjet systems, the ink in the reservoir is exposed to air, with the result that the ink is saturated with gas at an equilibrium level that depends on the pressure in the reservoir and the composition of the ink. This becomes a problem as the ink exits the reservoir and is transported to the printhead where the gas tends to come out of solution and form bubbles. [0003] The reason the gas is forced out of solution at the printhead is that the piezoelectric inkjet printhead acts as an ultrasound emitter in operation. Typically, the printhead can have an excitation frequency of about 30 kilohertz. Ultrasonic vibration is an effective method for removing gas from liquid solutions, and since in piezoelectric inkjet printheads, ink...
