Embodiment Construction

[0018] For purposes of simplicity and illustration, the invention has been described primarily with reference to exemplary embodiments thereof. In the following description, several specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced without being limited to these specific details. In other instances, well known methods and structures have not been described in detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure the present invention.

[0019] As described in more detail below, the transdermal drug delivery device includes a power source for providing power and / or current to one or more components of the drug delivery device. The logic device is for example configured to determine that the power supply can be controlled when the drug contained in the drug delivery device is to be released as scheduled. In addition, logic devices may also...

Abstract

A transdermal drug delivery device (100, 100') includes a cassette (104) and a lid (106) that is attachable to the cassette (104). The cassette (104) includes a first reservoir (110) for containing adrug (102) and microneedles (116). At least one of the microneedles (116) is in fluid communication with the first reservoir (110). The lid (104) includes a power source (114, 144) and an electronic device (138) configured to receive electrical energy generated from the power source (114, 144). The drug delivery device (100, 100') also includes a logic device (136) configured to selectively control delivery of the electrical energy to the electronic device (138), whereby delivery of the electrical energy causes the electronic device (138) to deliver the drug (102) contained in the first reservoir (110).

Description

technical field [0001] This application relates to transdermal drug delivery devices. Background technique [0002] Various techniques are known for delivering drugs into humans and animals. A more general group of these technologies includes drugs delivered orally, such as pills or capsules, drugs delivered transdermally, such as syringes or catheters, and transdermal patches. While these techniques are typically effective for drug delivery, they have certain disadvantages. For example, the effectiveness of orally delivered drugs is often reduced by degradation caused by the digestive system. The use of syringes or catheters typically requires personnel trained in their use and is associated with pain and localized damage to the skin. Transdermal patches have limited utility due to the inability of larger molecules to penetrate the dermis. [0003] Another recently developed technique involves the use of patches with micromachined needles formed into an array. These pa...
