Embodiment Construction

[0031] When steps and / or features with the same reference numeral are referred to in any one or more drawings, those steps and / or features have the same function or operation for illustrative purposes unless an intention to the contrary appears.

[0032] figure 1 A schematic flow diagram of a method 100 is shown for watermarking an image 101 by embedding a payload 140 within the image 101 to form a watermarked image 145 . figure 2 A schematic flowchart of a method 150 of decoding a watermarked image 145 to extract an embedded payload 140 from the watermarked image 145 is shown.

[0033] It is desirable that the perceptual errors introduced by watermarking the image 101 be minimized. Limits on human visual detection of image degradation provide a threshold of tolerable image quality loss, which in turn provides an envelope for the amount of information that can be safely dedicated to watermarking. One measure of perceptual error is a structural comparison that provides a me...

Abstract

A method (100) of watermarking an image (101) is disclosed. The method (100) segments the image (101) into regions. Each region is then characterised based upon one or more statistical features of the respective regions. For each region, a watermarking method and a number of bits to be embedded into the respective region are selected based on the characterization of the region. The number of bitsof data is then embedded into the respective region using the watermarking method selected for that region. A method (105) of decoding a watermarked image (145) is also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to watermarking images, and more particularly to adaptively watermarking images by embedding payloads within the images. Background technique [0002] The storage and distribution of media, such as images, is increasingly being done in digital format. Unfortunately, digital formats also make copying of such media very simple, whereby exact copies can be made, or the media can be altered without leaving obvious traces that the media has been altered. Therefore, there is a need for mechanisms to protect ownership of digital media or to detect whether the media has been altered. [0003] Digital watermarking is a technology that provides a solution to this need. A digital watermark is a piece of information embedded into digital data, such as a digital image, which can then be detected or extracted to make assertions about the data. This information can take many forms. The embedded information could be text da...
