Embodiment Construction

[0021] In general, this disclosure describes techniques for rate or quality control within an encoding device. More particularly, in response to a request to resize a multimedia data segment, the encoding module resizes the data segment to reduce a bit rate of the data segment. As used herein, the term "bit rate" refers to the number of bits used to represent a segment of multimedia data per unit of time. Bit rates are usually specified in kilobits per second (kbit / s). Therefore, the bit rate of the data segment corresponds to the size of the data segment.

[0022] The encoding module may adjust the size of the data segment by adjusting one or more encoding variables to reduce the bit rate of the data segment. As an example, the encoding module may resize the data segment by increasing a quantization parameter (QP) used to encode the data segment. As another example, the encoding module may resize the data segment by reducing the frame rate (ie, dropping more frames). The ...

Abstract

This disclosure describes techniques for resizing multimedia content for efficient statistical multiplexing. In response to a request to resize a current segment of data, an encoding module associated with the selected segment adjusts the amount of motion information to be encoded to resize the segment of data. For example, the encoding module associated with the selected segment of data may merge two or more motion vectors to reduce the amount of motion information to be encoded. As another example, the encoding module reselects encoding modes for one or more blocks of pixels of at least one frame within the segment of data.

Description

[0001] This application asserts Ser. No. 60 / 763,995, filed January 31, 2006, and entitled "MULTIMEDIA CONTENT RE / ENCODING AND STATISTICAL MULTIPLEXING" [Attorney Docket No. 060404P1] The benefit of the United States Provisional Applications, each of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to multimedia encoding and decoding, and more particularly to multimedia resizing for efficient statistical multiplexing. Background technique [0003] Data networks such as wireless communication networks must make a trade-off between services tailored to a single terminal and services provided to a large number of terminals. For example, distribution of multimedia content to a large number of resource-limited portable devices (subscribers) is a complex problem. Therefore, it is important for network administrators, content retailers and service providers to have a way to distribute content and / or other network serv...
