Problems solved by technology

[0008] However, there is the following problem: tuning the tag and reader circuits to resonance maximizes the performance of a single tag, however, this will lead to performance degradation if the tags are stacked or in close proximity
In this case the tag is detuned and the distance at which the tag can be remotely powered drops significantly

Embodiment Construction

[0035] The present invention provides a tag reader device for detecting the presence of tags within a stack of tags. The reader has an upper electrode and a lower electrode between which a plurality of tags are located. The reader electrodes are laterally offset from each other. Power coupling and data transfer to the tag use capacitive coupling to the tag, the tag having first and second tag electrodes lying in a common plane and separated from each other.

[0036] figure 1 The tag and reader configuration of the present invention is shown schematically, with a single tag also shown for clarity.

[0037] Each tag 10 includes a first tag electrode 12 , a second tag electrode 14 and a tag IC 16 . These are all in a common plane on the support 18 .

[0038] The reader has an upper electrode structure 20 with an upper electrode 22 and a lower electrode structure 24 with a lower electrode 26 .

[0039] The tags are positioned such that the upper reader electrode 22 is aligned...

Abstract

The invention provides a non-contact tag reader device, comprising an upper electrode and a lower electrode, wherein the upper electrode and lower electrode define a tag position area therebetween together, and a plurality of tags can be placed in the tag position area. The upper electrode and lower electrode are mutually offset so that the upper electrode and lower electrode are not overlapped actually. The tag is vertically clamped between two reader electrodes which are horizontally (transversely) offset with the structure so that the power coupling using capacitive coupling and data transmitting are realized.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to tag communication devices, including RFID systems; in particular, to reading multiple tags simultaneously. Background technique [0002] The use of tags to identify objects is becoming increasingly common, where tag reader devices are used to locate and communicate with tags. For example, tags may include contactless smart cards, contactless RFID tags, or contactless electronic badges. [0003] In particular, the invention relates to systems in which a bank of tags is to be interrogated. A known example is the use of tags in the form of electronic tags in libraries to identify books or CDs, which may typically be stacked in stacks of 5 to 10. Another known example is casino chips. [0004] In a typical configuration, a reader device in such a configuration has an antenna coil for emitting an oscillating magnetic field and is configured to detect the presence of a tag within the communication range of the reader.
