Problems solved by technology

Therefore, GPS may not be able to accurately predict when the phone is traveling at a high rate of speed change
In addition, a non-driving cell phone user in a public bus or coach cannot use a cell phone with a motion detection system because the high rate of speed change indicates that the user may be driving
Also, distinguishing between walking and driving patterns using GPS is difficult when motion speed is low

Embodiment Construction

[0022] According to one embodiment, a method for controlling the use of a mobile phone while a user is driving a motor vehicle is disclosed. When the term "mobile phone" is used throughout this specification, no limitation is intended. The term mobile telephone may include any type of wireless mobile computing device.

[0023] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method for controlling wireless communications in a moving vehicle is disclosed. The car key system and the mobile phone can be configured to communicate via a communication means such as Bluetooth, radio frequency identification (RFID) or a data line that enables the mobile phone to be associated with the car-key system.

[0024] In one embodiment, an in-line transmitter can be coupled to a conventional motor vehicle key. Recessed transmitters may include push button switches or opener buttons. In one embodiment, the actuation button releases the key, enabling the key to be used to drive the veh...

Abstract

A system and method for controlling wireless communications in a vehicle is disclosed. The system comprises a vehicle key (102) configured to communicate with the vehicle (107). A vehicle key code is configured to identify the vehicle key (102) to the vehicle (107) and associate the vehicle key (102) with a particular user of the vehicle. A mobile computing device (1 10) can be wirelessly connected with the vehicle key (102) or physically integrated with the vehicle key (102), and it is configured to identify when the vehicle (107) is activated using the vehicle key (102). Selected device features of the mobile computing device (110) are controlled when the vehicle (107) is activated using the vehicle key (102).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an integrated car key and mobile phone system for preventing use of a mobile phone while driving. Background technique [0002] In 2007, statistics showed that approximately 84% of the US population subscribed to some form of wireless mobile phone service. Nearly 6 percent of motorists admit to using a handheld phone while driving. The actual number of drivers using wireless devices is probably higher. The researchers said driving with a mobile phone was almost four times more likely to be involved in a crash, and the increase in crash risk was similar for non-handheld and handheld phones. [0003] The U.S. Department of Transportation sponsors numerous programs and initiatives to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries. Many states specifically prohibit talking, texting or playing video games on handheld phones while driving. Additionally, many states, such as California, have passed laws prohibiting or restrict...
