[0015] overview

[0016] Traditional search engines return a list of links for a single query. In traditional search engines, there is no concept of previous queries, previous input data, or what future actions are meaningful. This can cause trouble when users wish to engage in tasks that span multiple queries. For example, consider a task such as planning a vacation. To accomplish this overall task, the user may need to perform various actions, such as purchasing an airline ticket, obtaining a hotel room, and renting a car. For traditional search engines, each of these activities requires separate queries. Therefore, the task of planning vacations spans these multiple queries. It would be desirable to have a system capable of attempting to understand a user's broader intent when performing tasks that span multiple queries.

[0017] In the following discussion, a query refers to a single input to a search engine. A query may contain multiple query terms that are submitte...

Abstract

This article describes related tasks and subtasks for searching. Systems and methods for performing tasks and related tasks are provided. When a user performs a task, a set of related tasks is presented. When a new task is selected, a new set of related tasks is provided. This allows the user to perform a series of tasks without having to search for each task separately. As the user moves between tasks, task information items are passed between tasks so that previously provided information can be persisted.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to computer network technology, and more particularly to related tasks and small tasks for searching. Background technique [0002] Search engines are used to find various types of information. In response to a search query, a list of links to related documents may be returned. While this is a familiar format today, users often have to submit multiple search queries in order to complete complex activities. Additionally, users may have to click through multiple links in response to individual queries to find desired information or documents. This process has to be repeated until the user is able to complete the desired activity. Contents of the invention [0003] In various embodiments, systems and methods for executing tasklets and related tasklets are provided. When the user performs a small task, a set of related small tasks is presented. When a new small task is selected, a new set of related small tasks is provi...
