[0012] Various embodiments provide a notification shade user interface control, also referred to as a "notification shade," designed to help users maintain focus on their browsing activities while providing notifications in the form of suggestions. In at least some embodiments, the notification bar user interface control is non-modal and presents at a location within the browsing field of view chosen to reduce user distraction. For example, in the embodiments described below, a notification bar is presented at or near the bottom of the web browser user interface. Design the notification bar to be prominent but ignorable, thus enabling users to continue with their browsing tasks without being distracted by the modal dialog. Further, at least in some embodiments, the notification bar user interface control is presented in a manner that overlays the content of the web page so as not to cause changes to the layout of the web page.

Specifically, such notifications tend to be presented in the primary view, covering and obscuring content, and because of their modal nature, force the user to take some action before being able to return to their browsing task.
