Embodiment Construction

[0018] To facilitate new video applications such as three-dimensional television (3DTV) and free viewpoint video (FVV), data formats comprising multiple video views and corresponding pixel-wise depth maps are commonly used. This data format is called a multi-view plus depth (MVD) format.

[0019] In at least one implementation, we propose temporal filtering across depth maps at different time scales to improve temporal consistency in the depth maps and to eliminate false contours in regions with flat or smoothly varying depths.

[0020] In at least one implementation, we propose to use video information to identify correspondences between depth maps such that filtering is applied to corresponding regions / objects across time.

[0021] Processed depth maps typically typically have improved temporal consistency in static regions, and they contain much less banding (false contours). These improvements should not only provide higher rendering quality for virtual views rendered usi...

Abstract

Various implementations are described. Several implementations involve filtering of depth maps. In a general aspect, a first depth picture corresponding to a first video picture is accessed. For a given portion of the first depth frame, a co-located video portion of the first video frame is determined. A video motion vector indicative of motion of the co-located video portion of the first video frame relative to the second video frame is accessed. A second depth frame corresponding to a second video frame is accessed. A depth portion of the second depth picture is determined from a given portion of the first depth picture based on the video motion vector. A given portion of the first depth picture is updated based on the depth portion of the second depth picture.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 206,496, filed January 30, 2009, entitled "Temporal Filtering of Depth Maps," which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes . technical field [0003] The described implementations relate to encoding systems. Various specific implementations relate to the encoding of depth maps. Background technique [0004] Currently in many application systems, the depth map is obtained by a depth estimation method that finds the correspondence between different video views. The resulting depth map may exhibit some artifacts due to camera setup mismatches, different capture locations, and depth estimation errors. Use of such depth maps can result in unacceptable rendering errors of the generated virtual views. Contents of the invention [0005] According to a general aspect of the invention, a first depth picture correspondin...
