[0029] This disclosure is organized as follows. Section A describes an illustrative image matching system for matching query images to reference images and then incorporating the new reference images into the indexing system. The image matching system performs these operations in a swift manner. Section B describes an illustrative method for explaining the operation of the image matching system of Section A. Section C describes illustrative processing functionality that may be used to implement any aspect of the features described in Sections A and B.

[0030] As a preliminary matter, some of the figures depict concepts in the context of one or more structural components, variously referred to as functions, modules, features, elements, etc. The various components shown in the figures may be implemented in any way by physical and tangible mechanisms, eg using hardware, software, firmware, etc. or any combination thereof. In one case, the separation of various components illu...

Abstract

An image matching system for finding reference images matching a query image is described. The image matching system does this in a fast manner by limiting the matching to an enclosing area; this enclosing area may in turn be associated with locations where the query image may have been captured. Furthermore, the image matching system provides various mechanisms to speed up the addition of new reference images to the image index, thereby providing an enhanced learning mechanism for the image matching system.

Description

Background technique [0001] Currently, techniques exist for matching a query image to a corpus of reference images. In one instance, the method can be conceptualized as including an index creation (and index update) phase and a search phase. During the index creation phase, such systems extract image features from reference images. The system then creates (or updates) an inverted index that maps image features to reference images containing those features. During the search phase, the system can extract image features from the query image. The system can then use these query features along with the index to find one or more reference images that are likely to be similar to the query image. [0002] The above operations are complex and time-consuming to perform. This negatively affects the responsiveness of the index creation and search phases of such systems. This problem in turn reduces the utility of such image matching systems for the reasons set out above. Contents ...
