Embodiment Construction

[0019] Embodiments of the present invention overcome and solve problems associated with inaccurate flow rates due to height changes of the fluid reservoir or patient relative to the fluid pump. In particular, embodiments of the present invention provide a vacuum chamber adjacent to the fluid chamber to maintain a negative pressure differential between the pressure in the vacuum chamber and the pressure in the fluid chamber. Fluid in the fluid chamber is pumped via a pumping mechanism such as a piston or a pressure balloon. For example, when a piston mechanism is used, a vacuum chamber may be positioned adjacent to the fluid chamber to maintain a vacuum, and a piston head may be positioned to push against one side of the fluid chamber. Embodiments of the present invention achieve this at least in part by providing a resealable valve to the vacuum chamber. With this valve, an external pump can be used to remove air from the vacuum chamber. After removing the air, the resealabl...

Abstract

An intravenous fluid pump (IV) contains a disposable part including a fluid chamber having a resilient top membrane and a non-disposable part including a piston abutting a resilient membrane and a vacuum chamber fitted on top of the resilient top membrane. An external pump is used to create vacuum in the vacuum chamber, resulting in the resilient top membrane being held taut. The flow rate through the pump is relatively independent of changes in the pressure of IV fluid on the upstream and the downstream due to changes in the relative elevation of the fluid reservoir and the patient with respect to the fluid pump.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to fluid delivery systems, and more particularly to a method of maintaining flow rate accuracy in an intravenous fluid delivery system. Background technique [0002] Intravenous (IV) fluid delivery pumps are used to deliver fluids to or withdraw fluids from patients. Fluid delivery is achieved by use of gravity and / or pumps. A typical pump-based IV fluid delivery system includes a pump connected to a fluid reservoir via an input tube and to a patient via an output tube. During normal fluid delivery operation, the pump moves fluid at a flow rate from the reservoir to the patient. The flow rate can be controlled by a medical professional. Some applications require fluid delivery systems to strictly maintain flow rates set by medical professionals. [0003] The actual delivery flow rate of some IV fluid pumps currently available on the market is sensitive to changes in upstream and downstream fluid pressure. Su...
