Described herein are devices, systems, and methods for determining the composition of fluids, and particularly for describing the identity and concentration of one or more components of a medical fluid such as intravenous fluid. These devices, systems and methods take multiple complex admittance measurements from a fluid sample in order to identify the identity and the concentration of components of the fluid. The identity and concentration of all of the components of the solution may be simultaneously and rapidly determined. In some variations, additional measurement or sensing modalities may be used in addition to admittance spectroscopy, including optical, thermal, chemical, etc.

An improved inline intravenous fluid warming device. In one embodiment, the device includes a resistive film heater that is thermally coupled to a body having a serpentine fluid path extending therethrough. The film heater is coupled to the body via a first layer that is a thermally conductive and electrically insulative and a second layer that is thermally conductive. In another embodiment first and second resistive film heaters are employed to support either line power or battery powered operation.

A system for controlling the temperature of intravenous fluids according to the present invention includes a heating cabinet and a power supply cabinet. The heating cabinet includes a housing, a flexible cover and a heating plate with a generally curved configuration to uniformly heat a solution container. The cover wraps around the fluid container to secure the solution container against the heating cabinet. The heating cabinet further includes a heating controller to maintain the solution at a desired temperature. The power supply cabinet provides power to the heating cabinet and includes a display for indicating a solution temperature. A secondary power supply may be provided in the heating cabinet to facilitate heating controller operation when the heating cabinet is disengaged from the power supply cabinet. The system further monitors and provides reports of fluid temperature history.

A lithium polymer (LiPo) battery pack having LiPo battery cells is provided which includes battery protection circuitry, charging circuitry, cell balancing circuitry, and control and communication circuitry. The batteries can be charged while in use by an internal charger. Battery charging and discharging are accomplished in a controlled and protected manner to avoid overcharging and overdischarging conditions. The novel battery pack has built-in safeguards against dangerous LiPo battery conditions and is implemented in a small, portable unit which contains the battery cells, control and protection circuitry, internal charger and display gauge. The battery pack is useful for powering an intravenous fluid warmer or other medical or electrical devices and equipment.

The present invention is directed to an improved anesthesia manifold and an improved induction valve mechanism. A plurality of induction valve elements may be joined or “ganged” together in order to define a manifold. In the preferred embodiment of the induction manifold, at least two individual valve elements are combined to form the manifold. Each of the plurality of valve elements includes the following components: (1) a valve body; (2) a first inlet port carried by the valve body and defining at least in part a central fluid communication flow path for supplying intravenous fluid to patient; and (3) a second inlet port carried said valve body and at least in part defining an anesthesia drug inlet. Each of the plurality of valve components: (1) an induction valve mechanism which maintains said second inlet port in a closed condition until a predetermined amount of pressure is applied thereto; (2) a back flow valve mechanism which maintains said induction valve components in open condition to permit at least one of the following operations: (a) aspiration; (b) back flow; (c) purging; and (d) sampling.

Additionally, a control mechanism is provided for each of the plurality of individual valve components to actuate said induction valve mechanism and said backflow valve mechanism.

The invention discloses a critical care, transfusion control, and diagnosis and treatment integrated system and a control method thereof. The system comprises a transfusion device, a transfusion care base station, a central monitoring server and a medical PDA, wherein the transfusion care base station forms a transfusion scheme and performs open-loop control on the transfusion device by a wireless or wire mode, or adjusts transfusion parameters according to a corresponding closed-loop algorithm by monitoring and analyzing physiological parameters of patients during the transfusion execution, and performs closed-loop control on the transfusion device by the wireless or wire mode; the central monitoring server is connected with the transfusion care base station by the wireless or wire mode and monitors the operating state of the transfusion care base station; and the medical PDA is connected with the transfusion care base station and/or the central monitoring server by the wireless mode and is used for displaying transfusion condition and managing transfusion process. The system organically combines a treatment means (venous transfusion) and the effect of the treatment means (the monitoring of the physiological parameters) into one system, thereby realizing the closed-loop control of one or more transfusion devices, and improving medical quality and work efficiency of medical personnel.

A mobile IV pole has a wheeled base with an enclosure that substantially covers the wheels and a bumper secured to the enclosure. A pole is coupled to the base, and a plurality of hook or other holders are provided for holding intravenous fluid reservoirs. The pole may include first and second arms that extend substantially vertically upwardly from the base, each arm made up of respective lower, central, and upper telescoping tubular portions. The lower portions of the arms are securely coupled to the base, the upper portions are rigidly interconnected with one another, and the central portions of the first and second arms are rigidly interconnected by a stabilization bar which has a plurality of routing channels therein for routing flexible IV tubing. An obliquely oriented handle is coupled to the pole and is axially movable along at least a portion of the pole. The IV pole may be provided with an electrical receptacle having a retractable power cord. A hook or other hanger also may be provided at a lower portion of the pole for hanging a catheter bag, and a further hook, eyelet, or other coupling may be provided for towing the IV pole along with a gurney, wheelchair, or bed, for example.

The invention provides an intelligent venous transfusion monitoring system, which comprises a PC, a ward-level controller, sickbed-level controllers, infusion supports and a handheld alarming device, wherein the ward-level controller is arranged according to a ward number; the ward-level controller performs wireless communication with the sickbed-level controllers correspondingly arranged in the ward with the ward number; the ward-level controller is connected with the PC by an Ethernet for communication; and each infusion support is provided with a sickbed-level controller correspondingly. The system has the advantages of realizing 24 hour monitoring, avoiding errors made by medical-care personnel due to mistake or fatigue, reducing the labor intensity of the medical-care personnel and making up for the disadvantage of incapability of the medical-care personnel for 24 hour monitoring. In the invention, the real-time monitoring of the whole infusion state as well as abnormal condition alarming and management is realized, and the combination of infusion and ward emergency call and ward management systems. The monitoring system has high feasibility and is built on the basis of mature technology of sensors, electromagnetic valves, wireless communication, Ethernet communication, singlechips and the like.

A temperature sensing device measures the temperature of a fluid at selected locations along an IV fluid line. The device is secured to a selected portion of the IV line and includes a temperature sensor for measuring fluid flowing within that line. The device is coupled to a temperature display device to display the measured temperature. The temperature sensing device may include: a housing with a lower cover to engage the line and a temperature sensor; a holder movable along the line and including a temperature sensor; a housing with a lower member including a tip to pierce and measure temperature of fluid within the line; a resilient member with a spiral configuration and a tip to pierce and measure temperature of fluid within the line; a ‘T’-type fitting including a temperature sensor; or a ‘Y’-type fitting including a temperature sensor in the form of a needle.

A fluid warming cassette with a stiffening frame structure and a key mechanism is provided to support a parenteral fluid container. The fluid container is desirably thin to minimize heat exchange inefficiencies. The frame structure permits the thin fluid container to be inserted into the narrow space between fixed position warming plates of a warming unit. The frame structure has a quadrilateral shape with sides and ends. The fluid container is attached, at its periphery to the sides and ends of the frame structure, within the quadrilateral shape. The key mechanism prevents the cassette from being inserted upside down or backwards in a warming unit. Part of the frame structure may be formed into a handle to assist in both the insertion and removal of the cassette from a warming unit.

A system for controlling temperature of intravenous fluids includes a thermal treatment device and a temperature sensing device to measure a temperature of the fluid flowing through the sensor. The temperature sensing device may simultaneously collect two temperature measurements. For example, the sensing device may include sensors that measure the temperature of the fluid at two disparate locations along the medical fluid line. Additionally, the sensors may measure the temperature of the fluid within the medical fluid line, as well as the ambient temperature outside of the line. The thermal treatment device includes a conduit configured to have a nonlinear flow path through the device. The thermal treatment device thermally treats fluid within the conduit to a desired temperature or range.

A port closure system for use with a fluid container having fluid ports includes administrative and additive port closure assemblies. The administrative assembly receives a piercing pin and includes an administrative housing which seals closed one fluid port. A sleeve extends from an interior surface past a base surface in the administrative housing. The sleeve has an upper portion and a lower portion, of differing diameters. A cap assembly mates with the administrative housing, sealing the interior surface of the administrative housing. A removable cap provides access to the interior surface. The additive assembly receives a needle and includes a reseal housing which seals closed another fluid port. Another cap assembly mates with the reseal housing, sealing an interior face of the reseal housing. Another removable cap provides access to the interior face. A reseal element is mechanically retained between the reseal housing and cap assembly.

An intravenous flow control system provides closed loop control to maintain a desired flow rate. The actual flow rate is determined by two techniques, a geometrically based technique that uses geometric parameters of the IV system, and a thermally based technique that uses the power input to an IV fluid warmer and the temperature of the IV fluid entering and exiting the warmer.

A device and process for preventing medical errors due to the improper administration of an intravenously delivered medication includes the spectroscopic analysis of intravenous fluid components. An emission source and detector are placed adjacent to the intravenous tubing of an administration set to generate signals for spectroscopic analysis. The signals are processed to identify the medication and, in certain embodiments of the invention, can determine the medication's concentration. In a preferred embodiment, the emission source, detector, and hardware and software for the spectroscopic analysis are placed in an infusion pump.

A collapsible intravenous fluid pole system that can be easily stored or transported featuring a shaft with hangers disposed at the top end, the hangers being for attaching intravenous fluid bags, and legs pivotally attached at the bottom of the shaft. Wheels are disposed on the legs. The hangers can extend from the shaft or collapse to a storage position. The legs can extend or fold upwardly toward the shaft. The legs are attached via extension joints. A locking collar is disposed on the shaft. The locking collar can slide up and down along the shaft and can be inserted into a slot in the tongues of the legs to prevent the legs from folding upwardly to the folded position.

A system for controlling pressurized infusion and temperature of intravenous fluids according to the present invention includes a housing, a heating assembly and a flexible cover. The heating assembly is recessed within the housing and includes a generally U-shaped configuration to surround and uniformly heat fluid within a fluid container placed thereon. The cover wraps around a portion of the fluid container to secure the fluid container against the heating assembly. The cover includes a pressurization member to apply a desired pressure to the fluid container to achieve a desired flow rate of intravenous fluid from the fluid container to an infusion site on a patient. The system further includes a controller to control the heating assembly and pressure within the pressurization member in accordance with desired temperature and pressure information entered into the controller for system operation.

The invention relates to an automatic fluid preparation system and an automatic fluid preparation machine used for preparing intravenous fluids. The automatic fluid preparation system comprises an ampoule bottle conveying device, a penicillin bottle conveying device, an ampoule bottle breaking device, an injector arrangement device, a shaking up device, an infusion bottle conveying device and a multifunctional manipulator. Through the organic combination of the above devices, the fluid preparation is automatically completed in class 100 clean sterile environment without manual operations, so that safety and convenience are increased. In addition, after medical staff inputs an instruction sheet for fluid preparation, the automatic fluid preparation system can automatically check the types of configured medicine bottles, if differences occur, a dispensing action is stopped and an alarm is generated. The automatic fluid preparation system carries out a dispensing program after the medicine staff arranges the medicine which needs to be prepared, the whole process is carried out in a clean environment, so that manual intervention is reduced and the purpose of clean and safe production is achieved.

A co-extruded tubing for the administration of intravenous fluids has an outer layer of a polyester. An inner fluid-contact layer may be of a polyethylene or of a thermoplastic polyurethane. Where the inner fluid-contact layer is of polyethylene, an intermediate tie layer of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer may be included to prevent delamination.

Tubing for use with intravenous delivery of fluids to a patient is provided. The tubing is preferably see-through and includes a tubing wall defining an exterior surface and an interior surface. The interior and exterior wall surfaces define a channel for transferring intravenous fluid. An indicator for visibly distinguishing one tube from another similar tube is provided. The visible indicator may be a protruding ridge or a depression that traverses a length of the exterior surface, wherein the protruding ridge is helically wrapped around the exterior surface or run down a length of the tube longitudinally. The indicator may have a rectangular cross section, a hemispherical cross section or other suitable shape that traverses a length of the exterior surface. The indicator may additionally be colored or chemiluminescent to make the indicator more visible.

A warming device for an IV fluid line according to the present invention includes a warmer unit and a wye type fitting with an injection site. The warmer unit includes a tube for intravenous fluid and channels containing a warming fluid to heat the IV tube. One fitting branch is connected to an intravenous fluid source, while the remaining branch houses the injection site. The injection site branch includes an injection safety member that ensures a syringe needle or other instrument is contained within the fitting to prevent rupture of the IV tube. The warming device may include an additional wye type fitting coupled to the initial fitting and including another injection site, where the fittings typically exclude the safety member. A syringe needle is inserted into the additional injection site to prevent rupture of the IV tube. In addition, the warming device may be configured for needleless injections.

An IV product transport device is configured to transport an IV product from one location to another in automated fashion. The transport device may comprise a chassis with one or more ports for IV products. A drive mechanism is configured to move the transport device. In one embodiment, the transport device includes a controller. Information may be provided to the controller about an IV product, such as its intended destination or use. The controller may also exchange information with a delivery device, such as an infusion pump, to verify that the IV product is delivered to the proper destination. The transport device may include a delivery mechanism for off-loading an IV product. The transport device may deliver IV products of various configurations, including one in which the product comprises a flexible bag and a container housing for supporting and protecting the fluid bag.
