[0027] The following description refers to methods used to reduce exhaust gas aftertreatment systems (such as Figure 1-2 Shown) systems and methods for the amount of time required to reach catalyst light-off temperature. During positive valve overlap (eg image 3 ), by providing a boosted charge across the engine cylinders and injecting some fuel with the boosted blow-through air, the heat of oxidation can be directed toward the exhaust catalyst. Further, by injecting and combusting additional fuel in the engine cylinders and combining the product of the cylinder fuel and the blow-through mixture at the exhaust manifold, an exothermic reaction can be provided at the exhaust manifold to substantially increase the catalyst temperature . The engine controller may be configured to execute control routines (such as Figure 5-6 procedure described in ) to generate a flow of fresh direct air through the cylinders by driving a boosting device such as a turbocharger.
