Problems solved by technology

However, manual configuration of network topology is undesirable as it is labor intensive and error prone
Also, such manual topology updates are usually delayed for some period of time after the actual physical update of the network
During the time between network updates and manual topology updates, network monitoring systems will not be able to correctly analyze network protocols or operations

Abstract

The invention relates to automatic network topology detection and modeling. A method and system for identifying the topology of a network is disclosed. One or more monitoring probes capture data packets from network interfaces. Network elements, such as physical ports, physical links, network nodes, logical links, and SCTP associations, are identified from the captured data packets. A data model is created for storing the network elements, including the physical ports, physical links, network nodes, logical links, and SCTP associations. The data model also stores associations between the network elements. The monitoring probes pass network element data to a monitoring server. A topology agent in each monitoring probe identifies duplicates of previously detected network elements within the probe. A topology agent in the monitoring system server identifies duplicates of previously detected network elements within the monitoring system server.

Description

Technical field [0001] The embodiments are generally directed at identifying network nodes and interfaces in a telecommunications network, and more specifically directed at automatically detecting network topology. Background technique [0002] The network topology provides the mapping of nodes and interconnections in the communication network. Knowledge of the network topology is required to monitor the operation of the network and identify and solve any problems that arise in the network. Usually, the network topology is manually created based on the knowledge of which network elements have been put into use. However, tracking active network nodes and interconnections can be difficult as networks become larger, more complex, and more geographically diverse. Network operators need a complete view of the current state and composition of their networks. Existing network topology tracking may not reflect how users perceive the network. It takes a lot of time and effort to manua...
