Embodiment Construction

[0032] As described in detail below, the present invention includes several embodiments of an oral mirror for use in a system that facilitates visual inspection and observation of a person's oral cavity and upper airway. The oral mirror can be used for people's self-examination to determine whether the symptoms in their oral cavity or upper respiratory tract are abnormal or to seek medical advice. The oral mirror can also be used by an adult, such as a parent, to examine the condition of a child, visually determining the location and condition of areas of the mouth or throat where the child appears to have some abnormal symptoms. The dental mirror, in its various embodiments, can use an image sensor, such as a still image camera, video camera, or thermal image camera, to capture or record an image that can then be compared to normal surface anatomy to provide a preliminary diagnosis , and provide further guidance to seek medical attention if needed.

Abstract

The invention relates to an oral scope system with an image sensor and a method for visual examination of an oral cavity and an upper airway. An oral scope instrument for facilitating visual examination and inspection of a person's oral cavity and upper airway includes an elongate, flexible arm having first and second ends, a temperature sensor connected to the flexible arm adjacent the first end, an image sensor mounted adjacent the second end, a processor in electrical communication with the image sensor and an image display device. An illumination unit located adjacent the second end provides illumination for the image sensor. A handle connected to the first end enables manual insertion of the flexible arm into the mouth along a portion of the top of the tongue to engage the temperature sensor therewith and position the image sensor for viewing and recording anatomical features of the oral cavity or the upper airway. The processor stores normal anatomical images and may transmit images of recorded anatomical features to the image display device.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an oral cavity mirror system with an image sensor and a visual inspection method for the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract. Background technique [0002] Human beings have an innate ability to learn about their abnormal feelings (ie, symptoms) and to discover where their abnormalities are (ie, signs). Because of this unique survival skill, people are often the first to know if they need to seek medical care, and doctors are often the first to use signs and symptoms to make a proper diagnosis. Undoubtedly, self-recognition of body abnormalities plays an important role in maintaining good health and fighting disease. This is actually the first step in the fight against various diseases for humans. [0003] The human eye is capable of recognizing gross abnormalities such as tumors and masses, discoloration and swelling. Therefore, diagnosis based on visual inspection becomes a routine procedure for certain health problems...
