Embodiment Construction

[0011] Advantageously, the present invention provides methods and apparatus for presenting grouped data using the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) hierarchy. Although the invention is described primarily within the context of grouped data present in an electronic program guide, the specific embodiments of the invention should not be considered limiting of the scope of the invention. Those skilled in the art will recognize, and learn from the teachings of the present invention, that the concepts of the present invention can be advantageously applied to other types of grouped data. For example, the inventive concept may be applied to a listing of video items grouped by low, medium, and high bitrate video files under a hierarchy that groups items by file size range. The general concept of various embodiments of the invention includes grouping and filtering of data given characteristic or characteristic range criteria.

Abstract

A method and apparatus for sorting data include sub-categorizing sorted data using defined sub-categories of a digital live network alliance hierarchy and enabling a search of the sub-categorized sorted data using the defined sub-categories of the digital live network alliance hierarchy. The sorting of the present invention enables a search to be performed which requires reduced filtering processes to be performed by a requesting client to achieve a desired search result and reduced bandwidth for communicating a result of a search to a requesting client as compared with non sub-categorized sorted data. In one instance, universal plug and play attributes are used to search the sub-categorized sorted data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to accessing sorted data, such as electronic program guide (EPG) data, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for presenting sorted data using an expanded content hierarchy. Background technique [0002] Content can be stored on a variety of different devices and arranged using a variety of different organization methods. Typically, in the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), content directory services include listings of individual items (eg, songs, movies, listings of currently airing television shows, etc.). Typically, these items have associated attributes / properties defined by DLNA (ie, for a TV show, channel name is an attribute). Currently, if clients need to find TV shows that start in a certain time range (eg, 8-9am), they must query all items and then filter the items themselves. This lookup process is very inefficient. Contents of the invention [0003] Embodiments of the present invent...
