Problems solved by technology

While the choice of conventional high-conductivity metallic materials can somewhat reduce MRI-induced inductive heating by reducing the amount of energy actually introduced into the material via the skin effect, the resulting MRI-induced inductive heating can still be too high for some applications. of

Embodiment Construction

[0024] Embodiments disclosed in the present disclosure are described with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used throughout the several views to designate similar or equivalent elements. The figures are not necessarily drawn to scale and are provided merely to illustrate the disclosed embodiments. Several aspects are described below with reference to example applications for illustration. It should be understood that numerous specific details, relationships, and methods are set forth to provide a full understanding of the disclosed embodiments. One of ordinary skill in the relevant art will readily recognize, however, that subject matter disclosed herein may be practiced without one or more of these specific details, or with other methods. In other instances, well-known structures or operations are not shown in detail to avoid obscuring less-known structures or operations. The invention is not limited by the illustrated order of acts or events, a...

Abstract

A composition of matter includes a substrate material (M) having a bulk portion and an outer surface integrated to the bulk portion. The outer surface includes a modified surface layer. The modified surface layer extends to a depth from the outer surface of at least 1 nm. The modified surface layer includes M and at least one other material (X) which is a metal or metal alloy. The modified surface layer has a 25 DEG C electrical conductivity which is at least 2.5 % above or below a 25 DEG C electrical conductivity in the bulk portion of M. The composition of matter can be an article that includes a frequency selective surface-based metamaterial, and the plurality of modified surface portions can be a plurality of periodic surface elements that provide a resonant frequency.

Description

technical field [0001] The disclosed embodiments relate to materials comprising particles and objects having modified surfaces that provide a modified overall response to incident electromagnetic fields as compared to a bulk of the material. Background technique [0002] Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique commonly used to image the interior of the human body. In general, a strong magnetic field (eg, 1.5 T) is applied to the patient to align the nuclear magnetization vectors of hydrogen atoms in water of the patient's tissue under investigation. Simultaneously, an RF (eg, 63.86 MHz) magnetic field (-0.14 μT) is applied to perturb the aligned magnetization, causing the hydrogen nuclei to emit signatures of energy detectable by the scanner in the MRI system. [0003] The MRI signal is used to construct the image. Different tissues are tested because protons return to their equilibrium nuclear magnetization states at different rates in each tissue....
