Problems solved by technology

Multiple movements of active cable modems across channels according to conventional techniques may result in aggregation of currently inactive cable modems with high QoS requirements on the same channel
When any such aggregated high-QoS cable modem becomes active, it may not be able to achieve its required QoS
This may cause interruption of service to those cable modems, or alternatively, interruption of load balancing requirements

Embodiment Construction

[0017] For simplicity and illustrative purposes, the principles of the embodiments are described primarily with reference to examples thereof. In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments. It will be apparent, however, to one of ordinary skill in the art that the embodiments may be practiced without limitation to these specific details. In some instances, well known methods and structures have not been described in detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure the embodiments.

[0018] figure 1 An exemplary network 10 is illustrated in which a plurality of cable modems 12 or similar network elements are connected to a cable modem termination system (CMTS) 14 at a headend 16 of the cable network 10 . Each cable modem 12 can be accessed via the figure 1 Connected to the CMTS 14 is a cascade of hybrid fiber coax (HFC) components, generally indicated as HFC network 18 , including taps, passives...

Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for load balancing cable modems across channels of a load balancing group on a DOCSIS network are described. At least one quality of service (QoS) parameter is collected for each service flow from a cable modem actively delivering traffic from one channel across the load balancing group. The collected QoS parameters are used to identify at least one cable modem having a service flow employing a low-level QoS parameter relative to a predefined threshold for the QoS parameter. In order to load balance active service flows across channels, cable modems with service flows with low levels of said QoS parameters are first selected from the cable modems of the load balancing group for moving from one channel to the load balancing group different channels.

Description

technical field [0001] Apparatuses and methods for providing load balancing of active traffic across multiple channels of a data-over-cable (DOC) network are described. Background technique [0002] Cable television networks typically include cables, such as coaxial cables, fiber optic cables, or hybrid fiber / coaxial (HFC) cable systems, that interconnect subscribers' cable modems (CMs) with the headend of the cable network. Subscribers may use their cable modem and cable network to connect to the Internet and / or other computer networks. Cable modems support data connections to the Internet and other computer networks via cable networks, and cable networks provide a two-way communication system in which data can be sent downstream from a head-end to a subscriber and upstream from the subscriber to the head-end. [0003] A Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) is a device located at the head-end of a cable network and capable of receiving data packets from the data network a...
