A speaker array and microphone arrays positioned on both sides of the speaker array are provided. A plurality of focal points each serving as a position of a talker are set in front of the microphone arrays respectively symmetrically with respect to a centerline of the speaker array, and a bundle of sound collecting beams is output toward the focal points. Difference values between sound collecting beams directed toward the focal points that are symmetrical with respect to the centerline are calculated to cancel sound components that detour from the speaker array to microphones. Then, it is estimated based on totals of squares of peak values of the difference values for a particular time period that the position of the talker is close to which one of the focal points, and the position of the talker is decided by comparing the totals of the squares of the peak values of the sound collecting beams directed to the focal points that are symmetrical mutually.

Method and apparatus for data clustering including segmentation and boundary detection

A method and apparatus for clustering data, particularly regarding an image, that constructs a graph in which each node of the graph represents a pixel of the image, and every two nodes represent neighboring pixels associated by a coupling factor. Block pixels are selected with unselected neighboring pixels coupled with a selected block to form aggregates. The graph is coarsened recursively by performing iterated weighted aggregation to form larger blocks (aggregates) and obtain hierarchical decomposition of the image while forming a pyramid structure over the image. Saliency of segments is detected in the pyramid, and by computing recursively, a degree of attachment of every pixel to each of the blocks in the pyramid. The pyramid is scanned from coarse to fine starting at the level a segment is detected, to lower levels and rebuilding the pyramid before continuing to the next higher level. Relaxation sweeps sharpen the boundaries of a segment.

Block-level sampling in statistics estimation

System and apparatus for using block-level sampling for histograms construction as well as distinct-value estimations. For histogram construction, the system implements a two-phase adaptive method in which the sample size required to reach a desired accuracy is decided based on a first phase sample. This method is significantly faster than previous iterative block-level sampling methods proposed for the same problem. For distinct-value estimation, it is shown that existing estimators designed for uniform-random samples may perform very poorly with block-level samples. An exemplary system computes an appropriate subset of a block-level sample that is suitable for use with most existing estimators.
