Embodiment 1

[0097] Powdered, over-dried zeolite A4 (obtained from Industrial Chemicals Limited) with a Na:Si:Al ratio of 1:1:1 was added to a turbulent mixer (Lodige VT(A) 300 paddle dryer) equipped with a cooling system. )middle. While vigorously mixing the resulting composition, concentrated formic acid 99 wt% (Kemira Chemicals) was slowly and continuously sprayed on the zeolite. Contacting is complete when all the formic acid has been introduced into the mixture.

[0098] The following formic acid to zeolite ratios in wt% were tested:

[0099] Sample A: 1:3 ie, 24.5 wt% formic acid and 75.5 wt% zeolite;

[0100] Sample B: 2:3 ie, 40 wt% formic acid and 60 wt% zeolite;

[0101] Sample C: 3:7 ie, 30wt% formic acid and 70wt% zeolite

[0102] The reaction of formic acid with zeolite is exothermic. The temperature of the mixture is kept below 50°C by efficient mixing and external cooling.

[0103] A free-flowing solid powder was obtained which, in test A, had no formic acid odour. An...

Embodiment 2

[0107] Powdered, over-dried Zeolite A4 (obtained from Industrial Chemicals Limited) with a Na:Si:Al ratio of 1:1:1 was added to a turbulent mixer (Lodige VT(A) 300 paddle dryer). While vigorously mixing the resulting composition, concentrated formic acid 99 wt% (Kemira Chemicals) was slowly and continuously sprayed on the zeolite. The reaction was complete when all the formic acid had been introduced into the mixture.

[0108] Samples were prepared with a 1:2 ratio of acetic acid to zeolite, ie, 30 wt% acetic acid to 70 wt% zeolite.

[0109] The reaction of acetic acid with zeolite is exothermic. The temperature of the mixture is kept below 50°C by efficient mixing and external cooling.

[0110] A free-flowing solid powder with no acetic acid odor was obtained. Analysis showed that the sample had 70 wt% Zeolite 4A and 30 wt% acetic acid. Furthermore, the zeolite was found to be structurally intact.

Embodiment 3

[0112] The product A of Example 1 was introduced into pure water at a concentration of 1 wt%, to form a white slurry with a pH of 5.86.

[0113] When this product was introduced into pure water at a concentration of 10% by weight, a distinctly white slurry with a pH of 5.78 was formed.

Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions suitable for leather tanning comprising zeolites contacted with concentrated monocarboxylic acids, and methods of making said compositions. The method comprises providing a zeolite into a reactor and maintaining said zeolite in motion while introducing concentrated monocarboxylic acid thereto, provided that the average temperature of the resulting composition is maintained at a temperature equal to or lower than 50°C. Furthermore, the invention provides the use of said compositions for the treatment of leather and the resulting products and their use.

Description

[0001] The present invention relates to compositions suitable for tanning leather. Additionally, the invention relates to methods of making said compounds, and more particularly, certain uses thereof. Background technique [0002] Tanning is a stage in the process of turning animal hides into durable leather. In tanning, the protein structure in the cuticle is permanently altered. In addition to avoiding skin rot, the tanning process aims to increase water resistance, humidity resistance and usage as well as increase flexibility, anti-allergic properties and visual appeal. A pretreatment process known in the art is the so-called liming shop operation, which comprises a stage aimed at reducing the content of unwanted components after curing and before the actual tanning of the skin. [0003] There are three main tanning methods; aldehyde or synthan tanning, mineral tanning dominated by chrome tanning and vegetable tanning. Each of these tanning agents produces leather with d...
