Abstract

A navigation system produces audio cues that are perceived in three-dimensional space, allowing a user to audibly perceive the location of mapped objects, such as landmarks. The audio prompts may be generated alone, or in some applications in conjunction with a visual navigation map display to improve the overall efficacy of the system. The audio navigation system includes: a positioning system to determine a user's location; a memory to store hierarchically organized information about one or more objects; and a processor to present an audio signal based on the hierarchically organized information. The audio signal is presented into an audio space corresponding to the user to allow the user to perceive the position of at least one of the objects relative to the position of the user. The object may be a landmark in the vicinity of the user.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Nonprovisional Patent Application Serial No. 13 / 327,544, filed December 15, 2011, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to navigation systems, and more particularly, to navigation systems incorporating audio prompts. Background technique [0004] In HMI, a common problem is information overflow or overload. Humans have a limited ability to sense the information presented to them, and in the case of computers and other information-based devices, the amount of data that can be presented simultaneously can overwhelm the typical user. More importantly, in some cases, being presented with too much information can sometimes compromise security. [0005] Seeing (vision) and hearing (hearing) are the two most important senses when it comes to perception of the environment. Indivi...
