Embodiment Construction

[0042] Before describing several example embodiments of the invention, it is to know that the invention is not limited to the details of construction or processing steps set forth in the following description. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways.

[0043] Regarding terms used in the present invention, the following definitions are provided.

[0044] Reference to a "syringe assembly" includes syringes indicated for use with needles, nozzles, tubing, or in flushing systems.

[0045] As used herein, "a", "an" or "the" include both singular and plural.

[0046] As used herein, the term "non-encapsulated" refers to a syringe assembly that is not surrounded by an outer packaging material including, but not limited to, flexible and rigid blister packs.

[0047] The term "tortuous pathway" as used herein refers to a long known principle established by Louis Pasteur. In the experiments, Pasteur form glass flasks with vari...

Abstract

Syringe assemblies comprising a first cap and a second cap to ensure sterilization of the fluid path without the need for external packaging are described. Also described are methods of sterilizing the fluid path of a syringe assembly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to syringe assemblies, and more particularly to syringe assemblies in which the fluid pathways are capable of maintaining sterility without external packaging surrounding the syringe assembly. Background technique [0002] Clean or sterile items that are particularly useful for medical applications will be packaged in order to maintain their sterility. The packaging used for these items will provide a barrier to prevent microorganisms from entering the interior of the packaging and contaminating its contents. In most cases, the package will be opened just prior to use of the sterile item, such as a syringe assembly with a blister pack housing, in order to minimize the time the sterile item is exposed to sterile conditions. [0003] When a package used to protect sterile items, such as a syringe assembly, is opened and removed, the package needs to be discarded, resulting in an increased amount of waste generated by a hosp...
