Abstract

An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels and having display control circuitry to control operation of the display. The display control circuitry can adaptively adjust display output based on ambient lighting conditions. For example, in cooler ambient lighting conditions such as those dominated by sunlight, the display can display neutral colors using relatively cool white. When the display is operated in warmer ambient lighting conditions such as those dominated by indoor light sources, the display can display neutral colors using relatively warm white. Adapting to ambient lighting conditions may ensure that the user does not perceive a color shift as the user's visual color adapts to different ambient lighting conditions. Adaptively adjusting images in this way may also have beneficial effects on human circadian rhythms by displaying warmer colors at night.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority for the U.S. patent application filed on March 30, 2015 with application number 14 / 673,685 and the U.S. provisional patent application filed on November 17, 2014 with application number 62 / 080,934. These applications are in This is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical field [0002] This application generally relates to electronic devices with displays, and more specifically, to electronic devices with displays adapted to different environmental lighting conditions. Background technique [0003] The chromatic adaptation function of the human visual system allows humans to generally maintain a constant perceived color under different ambient lighting conditions. For example, an object that appears red when illuminated by sunlight is also perceived as red when illuminated by indoor electric light. [0004] Conventional displays usually do not consider different environmental lighting conditions or color adaptation of the ...
