Embodiment approach

[0057] Clause 1. Vacuum-packed assembly, including:

[0058] a wrapping film having a wrapping film length configured to be positioned over the composite layup and sealed to a tool surface having an inner corner;

[0059] a tube pack having opposing tube ends and a tube pack length configured to overlie the composite layup along the length of the inner corner; and

[0060] Each of the tube ends is configured to be sealed to the tool surface along a first portion of the peripheral edge of the tube end and to the wrapping film along a second portion of the peripheral edge of the tube end such that each of the tube ends is open to atmosphere.

[0061] Clause 2. The vacuum-packed combination of clause 1, wherein:

[0062] The tube wrap was not affixed to the wrapping film at the location between the tube ends.

[0063] Clause 3. The vacuum-packed combination of clause 1, wherein:

[0064] The tube package is formed as a separate component from the packaging film.

Abstract

A vacuum bag assembly (102) may include a bagging film (104) and a tube bag (200). The bagging film (104) may have a bagging film length and may be positioned over a composite layup (400) and sealed to a tool surface (302) having an inside corner. The tube bag (200) may have opposing tube ends (208) and a tube bag length and may be positioned over the composite layup (400) along a length of the inside corner (304). Each one of the tube ends (208) may be sealed to the tool surface (302) along a first portion of a tube end (208) perimeter edge and may be sealed to the bagging film (104) along a second portion of the tube end (208) perimeter edge such that each one of the tube ends (208) is openable to atmosphere.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] Composite materials find use in a variety of applications. In aircraft construction, composite materials are used in increasing quantities to form fuselages, wings, tail sections, and other components. During the formation of the composite structure, the composite plies may be laid up on a tool in the shape of the final composite part. Heat and / or pressure may be applied to the composite layer to cure or set the resin material in the composite layer. Compressive pressure can be applied to the composite layup by covering the layup with a vacuum pack, sealing the vacuum pack to the tool, and drawing a vacuum over the vacuum pack. Additional pressure can be applied by placing the packaged layup in an autoclave. The compressive pressure of the vacuum pack forces the composite layers against the tool surface during curing so that the final composite part assumes the shape of the tool. Compressive pressure also strengthens the composite layers ...
