Embodiment Construction

[0014] Exemplary embodiments relate to resolving conflicts between active database transactions using incremental maintenance processing. To improve database performance, materialized views are used to store the results of subqueries. Embodiments described herein avoid having to recompute a materialized view from scratch after each database update by using an incremental view maintenance process that updates the materialized view with tracking information generated during the initial materialization of the view. view.

[0015] Embodiments described herein resolve conflicts between active transactions by using incremental maintenance processing. When a transaction (T1) commits and updates a data item required by the active transaction (T2) (eg, writes a new value or deletes the data item), T2 is marked for maintenance on the change. Before T2 completes, the incremental maintenance process modifies the execution of T2 according to all changes made to required items by the comm...

Abstract

An aspect includes a method for maintaining active queries. The method includes executing a query based on data items in at least two relations in a database. The executing includes outputting a query result and control information associated with the query. The query result and the control information are recorded. A notification that at least one of the data items has been updated subsequent to the executing is received. The query result is modified, responsive to the control information, to reflect the data items that were updated subsequent to the executing.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Application No. 13 / 722067, filed December 20, 2012, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates to database queries, and more particularly to the maintenance of proactive database queries. [0004] Database management systems enable users to store and update large amounts of information, while also supporting queries for that information. Ideally, queries return answers that reflect the latest data in the database. However, long-running queries or transactions may need to process data that other parallel transactions are trying to update. [0005] Several existing concurrency control techniques attempt to manage such conflicting updates. For example, lock-based techniques can be utilized to prevent multiple transactions from gaining access to conflicting data items by making conflicting transact...
