Embodiment Construction

[0031] In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a knob or joystick device may be used to detect gesture-based movements of a user's fingers and / or hands. According to some embodiments described herein, a user can grab a knob or joystick and move the knob or joystick in either rotational direction (eg, clockwise or counterclockwise), horizontally / vertically, or in any combination thereof. lever, or push in or pull out the knob or lever. Combinable digital devices (eg, microcontrollers) use capacitive sensors for detecting, decoding, and interpreting various gestural movements therefrom. According to some other embodiments described herein, the user grasps the knob and moves his / her finger in a rotational, horizontal / vertical manner, and / or in / out along the axis of the knob. During motion of the user's finger, portions of the outer covering of the knob are deflected inwardly toward the capacitive sensor, wherein movement of the deflected portion of the outer c...

Abstract

A knob or joystick apparatus detects gesture based actions of a user's fingers and / or hand. A user grasps the knob or joystick and moves the knob or joystick in either rotational direction, e.g., clockwise or counter clockwise, moves the knob or joystick horizontally / vertically or any combination thereof, and / or presses or pulls the knob or joystick in or out. Capacitive sensors are used in combination with a digital device, e.g., microcontroller, for detecting, decoding and interpreting therefrom various gesturing movements. A user may grasp a knob and either moves his / her fingers in a rotational, horizontal / vertical, and / or in / out movement(s) along an axis of the knob. During the motion(s) of the user's fingers, portions of an outer covering of the knob are deflected inwards toward capacitive sensors, wherein the movement(s) of the deflected portion(s) of the outer covering are detected, decoded and interpretations are made therefrom of various gesturing movements.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a knob-based gesture system, such as a knob that rotates about an axis and / or can be pushed in or out, or an analog thereof; The capacitive touch sensor requires physical force on the touch sensor, and further shields the capacitive touch sensor from external undesired actuation by inadvertent approach of the user. Background technique [0002] Capacitive touch sensors are used as user interfaces for electronic devices (eg, calculators, telephones, cash registers, gas pumps, etc.). When an object (eg, a user's fingertip) causes a change in capacitance of the capacitive touch sensor, the capacitive touch sensor is activated (a signal indicating activation is controlled) by the change in capacitance of the capacitive touch sensor. Referring to FIG. 1 , depicted is a prior art capacitive touch sensor, generally indicated by the numeral 100 . A prior art capacitive touch sensor 100 includes a substrate 102, a sensor eleme...
