Embodiment Construction

[0016] Such as figure 1 As shown, most "smart" process transmitters share a common microcontroller-centric architecture. as in figure 1 As shown in the schematic diagram of the circuit of the process transmitter 100 provided, the architecture of the conventional process transmitter includes: one or more process variable sensors 105; and corresponding analog-to-digital (A / D) converter 110, Used to convert analog sensor signals into representative digital signals. Typically, the process transmitter also includes a non-volatile (NV) memory component 115 for storing process variables or other information during operation. Microcontroller 120 communicates with A / D converter 110 and memory component 115 via a bus, such as Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus 125 . The SPI bus 125 and corresponding SPI protocol that may be used for communication between a master device (eg, microcontroller 120 ) and slave devices (eg, A / D converter 110 , memory component 115 , etc.) are well know...

Abstract

A process transmitter (200) includes at least one sensor (202) which monitors a process variable, and analog-to-digital (A / D) converter circuitry (204) coupled to the at least one sensor and configured to provide process variable data indicative of process variable values. A digital signal processor (DSP) (210) is coupled to the A / D converter circuitry (204) to receive the process variable data. The DSP comprises a co-processor (215) configured to receive and perform calculations on the process variable data from the A / D converter circuitry (204) to generate output data. Communications circuitry (250, 280) of the process transmitter is configured either to control communication over loop wiring (145) which can be coupled to the process transmitter, or to control wireless communications with the process transmitter. A microprocessor (230), separate from the co-processor of the DSP (210), is coupled between the co-processor (215) and the communications circuitry to control movement of the output data from the DSP to the communications circuitry.

Description

Background technique [0001] Typically, a process transmitter includes a process variable sensor and measurement circuitry for measuring process-related parameters (temperature, pressure, flow rate, volume, etc.). The process transmitter also includes output circuitry for communicating process parameter outputs to instrumentation and control equipment. This transfer is usually done on an analog circuit, such as a 4-20mA current loop that requires an analog output circuit. Also, for process transmitters it is common to send process related information using a pulse output circuit that sends a pulse on the current loop or a digital communication circuit that sends a digital signal on the 4-20mA current loop. [0002] Most "smart" process transmitters share a common microcontroller-centric architecture. The demands on the microcontroller are very high, because the microcontroller usually must operate on a micropower (typically 1mA) demand; the microcontroller must read, process,...
