Abstract

This invention relates to an apparatus useful for the delivery of aerosols, such as those containing drugs, to the lungs or other locations in the body. The apparatus comprises a storage in liquid communication with an outlet path; a low-pressure pump inlet in liquid communication with the outlet path, a high pressure pump in liquid communication with the low-pressure pump inlet, a high pressure pump outlet in liquid communication with the high pressure pump, a switch valve in liquid communication with the high pressure pump outlet, with the switch valve being provided with a delivery outlet and a release outlet, and an aerosolizer in liquid communication with the delivery outlet, wherein an end wall of the aerosolizer is provided with holes, and a liquid flowing from the outlet path to the holes is free of gas when the storage contains the liquid. The disclosure also relates to methods of administering an aerosol to the lungs or other locations in the body of a patient. The method includes a) providing the apparatus, b) arranging the aerosolizer and a target tissue in the patient which are adjacent and c) applying the aerosol to the patient.
