Abstract

The present invention discloses an optical connector comprising a first attachment area (110) for receiving an optical waveguide and permanently attaching to the optical waveguide (115). The optical coupling unit (120) is provided and configured for translational rather than rotational movement within the housing of the connector. The optical coupling unit comprises a second attachment area (121) for receiving and permanently attaching an optical waveguide, the optical waveguide being received and permanently attached at the an attachment area. The light coupling unit also includes a light redirecting surface (122). The light redirecting surface is configured such that when the optical waveguide is received and permanently attached at the first attachment area and the second attachment area, the light redirecting surface receives and redirects light from the optical waveguide of light. The optical waveguide limits but does not prevent movement of the optical coupling unit within the housing.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to optical connectors for connecting sets of optical waveguides, such as fiber optic ribbons. Background technique [0002] Fiber optic connectors are used to connect optical fibers in a variety of applications including: telecommunications networks, local area networks, data center links, and internal links used in high performance computers. These connectors can be grouped into single-fiber and multi-fiber designs, and can also be grouped by contact type. Common contact methods include: physical contact, where the mating fiber ends are polished to a certain finish and pressed together; index matching, where a conformable material with a refractive index that matches the fiber core fills the small gap between the mating fiber tips; and air-gapped connectors, in which light travels through a small gap between the tips of two fiber optics. For each of these contact methods, a small amount of dust on the tip of the mated ...
