Embodiment Construction

[0057] The embodiments of the invention describe the best method known to the applicants for putting the invention into practice. However, they are not the only ways this can be done.

[0058] The methods of the invention can be used to diagnose and differentiate between different forms of dementia, including dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, vascular dementia, frontotemporal degenerative dementia (e.g., Pick's disease, basal ganglia degeneration and frontotemporal dementia), Huntington's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular disease, head trauma, and substance abuse. In some embodiments, Parkinson's or Huntington's are preferred. In some embodiments, AD is particularly preferred.

[0059] review

[0060] Earlier studies have shown that response time is often affected by different types of brain disorders (Gordon and Carson, 1990; Jahanshahi et al., 1992; Knopman and Nissen, 1991; Rinehart et al., 200...

Abstract

A system for assessing a mental health disorder in a human subject, the system comprising: a display configured to display a series of natural test images to the subject; an input by which the subject can input a response, following the display of each test image, as to whether or not the test image satisfies a predetermined categorisation criterion; a control processor configured to control the display of the test images by the display, to measure the duration of time from when each test image is initially displayed to when the corresponding response is input by the subject, and to generate a set of response data including the response times in respect of each of the test images; and a data processor configured to process the set of response data and to compare the processed response data with reference data to assess whether or not the subject has, or is likely to develop, the mental health disorder.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system for assessing mental health disorders. In particular, but by no means exclusively, it finds application in the diagnosis of dementia, particularly (but not exclusively) Alzheimer's disease. Background technique [0002] Intellectual health disorders affect many people around the world. Of these disorders, dementia is particularly prevalent among older adults. According to recent statistics, there are currently 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK alone (according to the Alzheimer's Association) and 36 million people worldwide (according to the World Health Organization), and every 20 years Quantity will be doubled. One in three people over the age of 65 will end their life with dementia. In the UK, 46% of people with dementia are never diagnosed. In the UK there is an average wait of six months (up to 18 months) at National Health Service memory clinics, and a full diagnostic process in the clinic...
