Embodiment Construction

[0017] Current designs for side door latches exceed requirements for weight, packaging, sound, quick lock / unlock, and cost. Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a latch assembly in which package size is reduced without compromising performance, and the weight, sound, and price of the latch assembly are reduced.

[0018] Embodiments of the disclosed latches achieve reduced noise during operation and steady state, fast lock / unlock performance, low energy release force required to unlock, protection from water ingress, low cost, and a smaller overall package size.

[0019] In one embodiment, the disclosed side door latch has a small stop that allows the overall package size to be reduced while maintaining the same strength performance as the larger latch. As such, the weight and price of the disclosed latch is reduced.

[0020] The time to lock and unlock the latch is reduced by using the direct center door locking mechanism.

Abstract

A latch has: a claw configured to rotate between an unlatched position and a latched position; a pawl configured for movement between an engaged position and a disengaged position, wherein the pawl retains the claw in the latched position when the pawl is in the engaged position and the pawl releases the claw when it is in a disengaged position, so that the claw is free to move from the latched position to the unlatched position; and a bumper located on the pawl to dampen noises as the pawl is moved by a portion of the claw, wherein the detent lever is pivotally mounted to a frame of the latch proximate to a corner of an opening of the latch.

Description

technical field [0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 087,785, filed December 4, 2014, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. [0002] Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to latches, and more particularly to latches for vehicles. Background technique [0003] A latch is used to restrict the movement of one component or element relative to another component or element. For example, a door latch restricts the movement of a door relative to the surrounding door frame. The function of this latch is to hold the door securely in the frame until the latch is released and the door is free to open. Existing latches typically have a mechanical connection linking the latch to an actuator, such as a handle, that can be actuated by a user to release the latch. The movement of the actuator is transmitted through a mechanical linkage which causes the release of the latch. The mechanical connection ma...
