Embodiment Construction

[0031] The portable device can be used for the detection of various metal, metalloid and nonmetal ions in liquid samples. Detection of analytes at low concentrations can be facilitated by various methods including, but not limited to, electrodeposition followed by electrochemical detection. However, electrochemical detection is susceptible to interference such as formation of metal ion complexes or other species, and interference from broad peak overlap in anodic / cathic stripping voltammetry. Furthermore, electrochemical detection depends on solution properties such as solution pH. Therefore, it would be desirable to combine electrodeposition techniques for preconcentrating analytes with well-resolved spectrometric detection to make the method specific for a variety of analytes of interest. It is also desirable that the method be automated, field deployable and capable of providing on-line analytical and continuous, unattended data on metal ion concentration levels in liquid ...

Abstract

A device and method is described for analyzing the elemental composition of a liquid sample utilizing a combination of electrochemical pre-concentration followed by spectrochemical analysis of analytein a single device. The device consists of two electrodes for the purpose of pre- concentration of the analyte ions by electro-deposition, a DC power supply / potentiostat / galvanostat, a high voltage power supply capable of creating an electrical discharge such as arc, spark, glow discharge or plasma, a spectrometer capable of recording a spectrum generated during such discharges as well as a pump(s) for pumping the analyte containing solution. Such a device is autonomous, field-deployable and capable of providing online analysis.

Description

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a device for analyzing the elemental composition of a liquid sample, and more particularly to a device that utilizes electrochemical preconcentration of analytes at the surface of an electrode to deposit analytes by high energy discharge or plasma evaporation and excitation , and perform spectrochemical detection of the analyte based on its characteristic atomic emission or mass spectral signal. Background technique [0002] Elemental analysis of samples is critical in many scientific disciplines and is commonly performed in environmental monitoring, drinking water monitoring and food analysis. Elemental analysis is usually performed by optical atomic spectroscopy techniques such as atomic absorption (AA), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS) or by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). These methods can provide very good detection limits, although they...
