Abstract

A platoon management control system and method for locally detecting and determining non-platoon vehicles intervening or otherwise positioned between and / or adjacent to one or more platoon vehicles. The platooning vehicle determines a forward physical distance between itself and a vehicle physically ahead, and compares the determined physical distance to a rearward distance value received from the immediately preceding platooning vehicle. Based on the correspondence between the determined physical distance and the received backward distance value, it is determined that the vehicle physically ahead is the immediately preceding vehicle in line. Conversely, based on the non-correspondence between the determined physical distance and the received backward distance value, it is determined that the vehicle physically ahead is a non-platoon vehicle.
