Embodiment 1

[0074] Example 1: Atrioventricular Ablation

[0075] In one non-limiting example, studies were conducted to demonstrate that the disclosed systems and methods are capable of achieving superior results not achievable using conventional practice. This study attempted to completely non-invasively ablate the AV junction with image-guided application of a single photon beam in an intact porcine model. Studies have shown that intensity-modulated radiation therapy can be relatively precisely focused at the AV junction and achieve complete AV block noninvasively despite cardiac and respiratory motion. Complete AV block can be achieved with relatively small X-ray doses, while the size of the lesion increases with dose.

[0076] Methods / study design: Ten healthy domestic pigs of either sex (sus scrofa domestica) were randomized to atrioventricular junction irradiation at doses of 25, 40, 50 and 55 Gy at ten weeks of age.

[0077] Monitoring during anesthesia and surgery: Anesthesia wa...

Embodiment 2

[0108] Embodiment 2: the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia

[0109] In another non-limiting example, another study was performed demonstrating that 4D therapeutic dose reconstruction for ion beam ablation of arrhythmias in an animal model extends to cardiac motion.

[0110] Materials and Methods / Cohort of Animals: Animal numbers are the same in both publications. Table 3 presents the profile of this animal cohort (animal cohort, including targets (AV: atrioventricular node, LV: left ventricle, PV: pulmonary vein isolation) and dose groups for ion beam ablation studies performed at GSI. Dose reconstruction Pigs included in the analysis are marked in bold.) Animals received carbon ion beam therapy at three different target regions: (1) atrioventricular junction (AV), (2) left ventricular free wall (LV), (3) The junction of the left atrium and pulmonary veins (PV). For AV, different target doses were used to study the dose-response relationship. For the purposes of this study, t...

Abstract

Particle or hadron therapy is used on abnormal tissue using carbon atoms, protons, or helium atoms run through a linear accelerator and then directed at the target in the body. This can be used to treat, for example, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, hypertension, seizures, gastrointestinal maladies, etc. Contouring and gating may be used to account for cardiac and respiratory motion, helping reduce collateral damage.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 552,614, filed August 31, 2017, entitled "Systems and Methods for Carbon Particle Therapy for the Treatment of Cardiac Arrhythmias and Other Disorders." [0003] Statement Regarding Federally Funded Research [0004] Not applicable. technical field [0005] The invention set forth in this document relates generally to the use of particle or hadron therapy to target specific tissues, and more specifically to the delivery of accelerated atoms and protons into, for example, the heart to penetrate deeper into that tissue and reach abnormal heart rhythms Specific source of , despite simultaneous tissue movement. Background technique [0006] Cardiac arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart beats irregularly, which can lead to stroke, infarction, and sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrhythmias are disturbances in the coordinated he...
