An accumulator for storing electrical energy in the form of thermal energy, comprising an electric heater for converting electrical energy into heat energy, an accumulator for storing thermal energy from the electric heater, and an accumulator for releasing thermal energy from the heat accumulator heat exchanger. The heat accumulator at least includes: a plurality of metal rods arranged upright for storing heat energy from the electric heater; a base; and a plurality of supporting units, wherein each supporting unit supports one of the metal rods and is connected with the base. Furthermore, a corresponding method for operating such an energy store is described.
