Embodiment Construction

[0059] Referring to the accompanying drawings, methods, devices and systems according to preferred embodiments will be described.

[0060] refer to figure 1, which illustrates, according to a preferred embodiment, entities that may be involved in operating from a location within an Internet Service Provider (ISP) network 35 or another such "external" network (i.e., within the local area network in question ( A location within a network external to a LAN) performs network performance monitoring for one or more LANs 15, 25 of a remote premises (such as a home or small office) and thereby obtains diagnostic test results on the one or more LANs. Briefly, according to this embodiment, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) can be used to gather details about what device is being used. Each device can then be categorized by how it communicates within the home LAN in question and in terms of its portability, allowing the ISP in question to detect poor wireless network performance and In the ...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for obtaining diagnostic test results in respect of local area networks (LANs), the LANs (15, 25) having user-devices (11, 12, 13, 14, 21) located therein having interfaces and being operable to communicate via those interfaces and via a LAN gateway device (10, 20) with remote devices (39, 46, 21, 11, 12, 13, 14) in a communications network outside their respective LANs (15, 25). The method comprises comparing performance measures obtained in respect of communication flows with a performance threshold whereby to identify communication flows whose performancemeasures are indicative of performance below a predetermined level, and for any such communication flows, obtaining a diagnosis in respect of the LAN in question (15) in dependence on a comparison ofthe performance measure obtained in respect of the identified communication flow and performance measures obtained in respect of other communication flows, the diagnosis being obtained in dependenceon respective portability levels and network interface types determined in respect of the user-devices involved in said communication flows.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for obtaining diagnostic test results on a local area network. Background technique [0002] How customers rate the services they receive from their various Internet-connected computing and telephony-like devices depends to a large extent on their perceived quality of experience with respect to Internet-delivered services. The perceived quality of experience will depend on the quality of service (QoS) that can be achieved end-to-end (eg, from the content origin server or remote device to the device in the home). The achieved QoS will in turn depend on a number of network key performance indicators (network KPIs). Examples of network KPIs include loss, latency, jitter, and throughput. [0003] Wireless access is becoming the primary means by which devices communicate within homes and public networks such as WiFi hotspots. The inherent variation in quality of service (QoS) achieved by fixed-line ...
