Embodiment Construction

[0034]Embodiments disclosed herein relate to devices and methods for performing prognostic assessment of subjects with prostate cancer. Prognostic evaluation involves determining a prognostic score related to the cancer, which can be used, for example, by a medical professional to decide whether the cancer should be treated, and if so, the nature of the treatment to be administered. According to some embodiments disclosed herein, the prognostic score may be determined using a model or algorithm trained using machine learning techniques. Accordingly, one aspect of the invention relates to the training of an algorithm (eg, a predictive model, such as a classifier) that is trained to output a prognostic score based on various input features.

Abstract

The invention discloses apparatus for performing a prognostic evaluation of a subject potentially having prostate cancer. The apparatus comprises a memory comprising instruction data representing a set of instructions; and a processor configured to communicate with the memory and to execute the set of instructions, wherein the set of instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to obtain a subject profile (102) associated 5 with the subject; obtain clinical data (104) associated with the subject; obtain imaging data (106) acquired in respect of the subject's prostate; obtain pathological information (108) relating to a biopsy acquired in respect of the subject's prostate; determine, based on at least the subject profile, the clinical data, the imaging data and the pathological information, a prognostic score (110, 112) relating to the cancer. Computer-implemented methods and a 10 computer program product are also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device and a method for performing a prognostic assessment of a subject, in particular a subject suffering from prostate cancer. Background technique [0002] Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Screening for prostate cancer has led to a reduction in advanced disease and disease-specific mortality, but has also led to overdiagnosis of conditions that would not have caused death if left untreated. [0003] Cancer is described in terms of "stages," which refer to the extent of the cancer, such as the size of the cancer tumor, and how far the cancer has spread. Proper staging of prostate cancer can help prevent overdiagnosis because the stage assigned when the cancer was diagnosed can be used in determining which treatment to administer. To characterize prostate cancer, a panel of experts is provided with patient details and cancer details. Experts are asked to correctly interpret the cancer status and p...
