Abstract

A medical device for bonding materials is provided. The device includes a piercing element configured to pierce a material to be bonded. A piercing element that is sufficiently sharp to penetrate the material to be bonded and includes a hollow interior along at least a portion of its length, the hollow interior configured to enable distal advancement of a fastener therein; and an open tip through which the fastener can be pushed. The devices may be used to fasten materials, including tissues, synthetic patches, and biological patches (e.g., ADMs).
