Embodiment Construction

[0023] figure 1 is a side view of the rear of a bicycle 10 including a particular embodiment of a hub transmission 14 incorporating many of the features of the present invention. The rear portion of the bicycle 10 includes a frame 18 having a seat tube 22 supporting a saddle 24 , a pair of conventional chainstays 26 , and a pair of conventional seatposts 30 . The wheel 34 is rotatably supported by the axle 36 about the hub transmission 14 at the frame end 35 at the intersection of the chain post 26 and the seat post 30, and the foot is rotatably supported at the intersection of the seat tube 22 and the chain post 26. Crank assembly 38 of pedal 42 and chainring 46 . Chain 50 engages chainring 46 and winds around sprocket 54 that rotatably drives hub transmission 14 . Bowden-type control cables 62 are used to vary the gear ratios in the hub transmission 14 in the manner described in detail below.

Abstract

A hub transmission for a bicycle comprises a hub axle; a driver rotatably supported to the hub axle; a hub shell rotatably supported to the hub axle; a power transmitting mechanism disposed between the driver and the hub shell for communicating rotational power from the driver to the hub shell through a plurality of power transmission paths; a shift mechanism for selecting the plurality of power transmission paths; a shift assist mechanism for communicating rotational power from the driver to the shift mechanism; and a power control mechanism disposed between the driver and the shift assist mechanism and coupling the driver to the shift assist mechanism for controlling an amount of rotational power communicated from the driver to the shift mechanism.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to bicycle transmissions, and more particularly to an internally mounted multi-speed hub transmission for bicycles. Background technique [0002] An internally mounted multi-speed hub transmission is sometimes mounted to the rear wheel of the bicycle, allowing the rider to select different gear ratios to vary the power to the pedals. The general hub transmission includes a hub shaft installed on the bicycle frame, a driver that is rotatably supported on the hub shaft to receive pedal force through a sprocket and a chain, and a hub shell that is rotatably supported on the hub shaft. A power transmission mechanism is disposed between the driver and the hub shell for transmitting rotational force from the driver to the hub shell through a plurality of power transmission paths, each power transmission path typically producing a unique gear ratio. The power transmission mechanism generally includes a planetary ...
