An instrument having a single video input port coupled to the analog and serial digital video input paths for receiving analog or serial digital video signals. The output of the analog or serial digital video input path, respectively, is used as the input of a video switch, and the output of the video switch is provided to the instrument for further processing. Information from the serial digital video input path, which may include clock recovery lock, carrier detect and / or video standards, is provided to a decision module used to generate the selection signal for the video switch. For example, if a "lock" occurs, the output from the serial digital video input path is automatically selected as the output of the video switch, otherwise the output from the analog video input path is automatically selected.
