Embodiment Construction

[0049] Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the general arrangement of the main parts of a constructional solution of a first embodiment of a steering gear made according to the present invention.

[0050] Rack 1 and pinion 4 are constructed according to generally accepted arrangements used in rack and pinion steering gears. A tie rod (not shown) is attached to each end of the rack and is pivotally connected to a steering arm extending rearwardly or forwardly from the vehicle's pivoting front wheels. The rack 1 slides in the rack guide 2 and is combined with a housing 3 ( figure 2 and 3 ) and in a journal bearing (not shown) on the opposite side of the vehicle. The pinion 4 meshes with the rack 1 in a conventional manner and is connected for rotation with the steering wheel 5 via the steering column 6 .

[0051] In the form of the steering gear that will be described, an electric motor-driven booster derived from the electric motor 8 is provided. Operation of the motor 8 is controlled ...

Abstract

A rack (1) and pinion (4) steering gear for a vehicle in which the steering angle ratio varies as a function of at least both the steering wheel angle input by the driver and vehicle speed. The steering gear comprising a rack (1) laterally displaceable with respect to a steering gear housing and a pinion (4) laterally moveable within the housing substantially in a direction of travel of the rack (1) whilst engaged with the rack (1). The steering angle ratio is increased in a central region of travel of the rack (1) when compared to regions either side thereof, and steering angle ratio is further increased in the central region as vehicle speed increases.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a variable transmission ratio steering system in which the transmission ratio between the driver's control unit and the wheels varies firstly according to the vehicle speed and secondly according to the angle of rotation relative to the center of the wheel. More specifically, the present invention relates to a variable ratio steering gear in which the ratio between the magnitude of the driver's input to the control device and the rotation of the wheels (hereinafter referred to as the steering ratio) is in the central region of the rack increases in the middle and further increases in the central area of the rack as the vehicle speed increases. Background technique [0002] Various attempts to achieve the above goals have been described in literature and patents, based on electronic means, without any direct mechanical connection between the driver's controls, be it a steering wheel or a joystick or similar thing.
