Problems solved by technology

First, the average user may not know what is possible or practical in this environment, since available resources (devices and applications) may be constantly changing, and furthermore, users cannot rely on a flexible and uniform user interface to Easily manage interactions with this environment
In other words, a personal computing approach is not feasible in a setting full of devices and applications that are not known to the user

Embodiment Construction

[0141] In this article, task computing and its embodiments will be discussed.

[0142] Overview of Task Computing

[0143] Task Computing aims to help a user who has no prior knowledge of the environment in which a certain function is implemented to achieve a complex task using said function at her disposal, and does not need to interact with or understand the resources of this function. The basic elements of mission computing are: the user knows and understands her mission, and the mission computing environment (TCE) understands devices and services and knows how to interact with them. Combining the two, users and TCEs, can cooperate to complete arbitrarily complex tasks.

[0144] In today's computing environment, users are surrounded by functions presented to them in the form of devices or computer-mediated services such as electronic services (e-services) on the Internet ), an application running on a computing device operated by a user, or simply a device that supports a...

Abstract

A computer-based system includes task computing enabling users to define tasks by combining available functionality and to execute such tasks. The computer-based system of includes available functionality which originates in devices, computing applications and electronic services available through local and remote procedure calls including Web Services, UPnP (204), CORBA, RMI, RPC, DCE, DCOM or comprises previously defined tasks. All available functionality is abstracted to the user as a service and each service is expressed in a service description language, and the services have a semantic description associated with them.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to personal and ubiquitous computing, and more particularly to preparing and performing computing tasks. Background technique [0002] The Current State of Computing: Personal Computing [0003] The paradigm of a personal computing user operating a single device and accessing / using applications residing on that device. Personal computing requires users to have a good understanding of their computing environment and the applications available on their machines, so that knowledgeable users can make full use of available resources to perform complex tasks. This is computing that most of us experience on a daily basis; the burden of learning how to accomplish complex tasks still falls on the user, who must understand each application running on their machine and the functions they support Manually transferring data (cut and paste) between applications, having to manually invoke individual applications and specific ...
